What is AFSS?
The Angel Food Sound System (AFSS) is an interdisciplinary community resource that offers access to sound infrastructure in Detroit, Michigan. AFSS is designed to support local artistic expression outside of extractive and exploitative environments with our core resource: Our custom-built four way, horn loaded, high fidelity sound system.
Angel Food Sound System was graciously designed by contemporary speaker designer Mo Yasin, and built in tandem with master carpenter Ed Ponti and Detroit residents Elijah, Saylem, Corey, Caitlin, John, Ana, Nadia, Sarah, Andrew, Andre, Lyla, and Matt.

How does AFSS Work?
The AFSS is a platform and tool for imagining new ways of listening, gathering, and community building. AFSS is a modular sound system that complements local sonic community programming. Through our team of volunteers, we support Detroit’s musicality by helping people gather in non-traditional, communally controlled environments.
We have a vested interest in supporting non-commercial events, neighborhood gatherings, and programs that go beyond the walls of traditional venues. We also have a stated commitment to prioritize access by undervalued groups to our system, as these groups are often priced out of sharing music and sound works that are pivotal to Detroit’s working-class artist culture.

Activating archival and rare audio recordings from local activists and artists within a group setting.

Deep Listening Made Accessible
Hosting deep listening sessions inspired by communal hi-fi listening spaces.

Inter-disciplinary Artist Use
Pairing sound art with print media, film screenings, study sessions, storytelling and spatial sound application.

Installation Iterations
Creating ephemeral, immersive sound-based environments in tandem with existing pillars and projects within the arts, music, and cultural frameworks of Detroit.
